Acer Aspire Switch 12 S announced: Core M, Thunderbolt and 4K display with pen

Today Acer announced the most advanced model in its award-winning Aspire Switch line of 2-in-1 notebooks – the Aspire Switch 12 S (SW7-272). The new hybrid Tablet PC combines an ultra-thin design with a large connectivity and active pen support.

During the first day of CES 2016, Acer unveiled the new Aspire Switch 12 S hybrid Tablet PC, a 12.5-inch device with an elegant anodized aluminum fanless chassis with diamond-cut edging, powered by Skylake-Y Intel Core M processors.

Compared to older Aspire Switch models, one of the main improvements of the new Acer Aspire Switch 12 S is the new, third-generation Acer Snap Hinge Gold: it features a latch-less magnetic docking mechanism for the keyboard but also a new 6 Gbps data streaming connector that allows the presence of full-speed USB 3.0 ports on the backlit keyboard. The connectivity also included a Thunderbolt 3 USB-C (that can be used to connect an optional Acer Graphic Dock to boost the performance) and a Intel RealSense R200 3D camera for 3D scanning.

The 12.5-inch, 16:10 display is available with 4K (3840×2160) or Full HD (1920×1080) resolution and it is protected by Gorilla Glass 4. The IPS display support the Acer Vision Care suite that includes Acer BluelightShield and Acer Lumiflex technologies for reduced eye strain and for optimized viewing in different lighting conditions; an active digitizer is also available (the technology is unconfirmed, but is it almost sure that it will be the same used into the Aspire Switch 11 V and into the last-generation Aspire R13).

Very particular is the new patented Acer ExoAmp antenna, that is “discreetly embedded” into the metal chassis to provide optimal WiFi performance while maintaining the device’s unified look and feel. According to Acer, this innovative antenna placement avoids system noise, so the 802.11 b/g/n/ac WiFi can be up to three times faster, more stable and reliable.

The full datasheet shows:

  • Intel Core M (Skylake-Y) processor
  • Intel Graphics HD 515
  • 4 or 8 GB DDR3L RAM
  • 128 or 256 GB SSD
